Having had Florence on my bucket list of destinations to visit for as long as I can remember, I finally got to visit the renaissance rich city this past summer. As far as Italy goes, I had already visited Rome and Milan in previous years so I pretty much expected Florence to have a similar vibe of a busy, tourist packed and scams around every corner type of energy that comes with big european cities. As soon as we got to the city center of Florence, I was very pleasantly surprised by not just the quaint and charming beauty of the city that instantly felt different from the other two cities, but the beautifully calming way in which it reminded one of the rich art history it was home to. From browsing the world famous paintings at the Uffizi Gallery to soaking in the Florentine energy at night by the Ponte Vecchio, there are so many ways to spend your time in the city. Sharing some of my favorites below.
Things to Do in Florence
Visit the Florence Cathedral
Saved to my Pinterest boards for years and years, I finally got to visit the beautiful cathedral in the center of Florence and it did not disappoint.
Discover Michelangelo’s David
Make a visit to the Accademia Gallery to marvel at the famous sculpture of David by Michelangelo. Make sure to book well in advance as this is regularly sold out.
Explore the Uffizi Gallery
Home to world famous masterpieces by Botticelli, Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, this is a must see. Make sure you make timed reservations in advance to avoid any disappointment.
Go Shopping for Authentic Italian Shoes at Local Shops
Being in Italy means having access to the best and world famous italian leather goods that are not just limited to designers. Just south of the River Arno, we stumbled upon a few leather stores which were home to a huge variety of loafers, sneakers, boots, sandals and more. An absolute must ‘shop’ experience whilst in Florence.
Wander along and jewelry shop on Ponte Vecchio
Take a glamorous and picturesque stroll along the Ponte Vecchio, a medieval bridge lined with shops selling fine jewelry and watches. The pieces are so delicate and finely made with the most beautiful gemstones. I treated myself to a beautiful emerald ring at a fraction of the cost that it would have been in North America.
Inhale the Sandwiches for Breakfast and Pasta for Dinner
The food scene in Italy is world famous for having simple dishes that are bursting with flavor. I had some of the best Cacio e Pepe and fresh mozzarella paninis at many different local Osterias and Trattorias. The food is truly incredible so I highly recommend local stops!
Explore the Palazzo Vecchio
Immerse yourself in the grandeur of the Palazzo Vecchio with it’s decadent ceilings, life size paintings and the galleries of statues including a copy version of the infamous David.
Take a Day trip to Tuscany
If youโre only in Florence or the region for a few days, take day trip to the picture perfect Tuscan countryside. From olive oil tastings, rolling hills, vineyards and unbeatable views, Tuscany is a stunning and worth it escape.
Visit the Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella
Explore one of the oldest perfumerie and pharmacies dedicated to the most beautiful scents, soaps and other fragrances. There is even an apothecary addition which reminds one of the old world aesthetic.
