Greece had been on my bucket list of destinations for a few years now and so Mustafa and I decided to head to Mykonos for our anniversary this year. I put together this mini Mykonos Travel Guide for anyone planning to visit this beautiful glittering island.
Getting to Mykonos from London
Most people head straight for Santorini, and we definitely considered it as well. But with the limited time we had and wanting to keep the trip more relaxed, we decided to stick to one island. It was made even easier since we managed to get direct flights from London for the exact dates that worked for us. The flight took less than 4 hours and before we knew it, it was crystal clear blue waters with the contrasting terrain of the island itself (see vlog here).
We had pre-arranged a transfer from the airport to the hotel and it was all very seamless. Took the stress of getting from the airport to our final destination totally off of our plate (more on transport in a bit).
Getting Around Mykonos
We spent the first day completely relaxing and enjoying our time at the hotel resort. Since we went at the very beginning of the season, it was very quiet and the vibe was absolutely perfect, calm and serene.
The next day, we had booked to rent an ATV for two days of our trip through our hotel. Interestingly, the island of Mykonos has a total of 30 taxis! We were told it was extremely difficult getting hold of a cab if we wanted to go around the island or even come back to the hotel from the Old Town of Mykonos. So ATV it was!
This was the best decision ever, because we used our ATV to literally go around the entire island and really enjoyed the mobility as well. It was a little daunting in the beginning because we felt super exposed. I mean, we were on a small little ATV in the middle of a main road! I haven’t even ever been on a motor bike before! But very quickly realized that there were literally TONS of couples exactly like us doing the exact same thing. Once we got a little comfortable, it was an absolute hoot and an unforgettable experience! (more on this when I finish my vlog!)
The streets of Mykonos are exactly as one would imagine and walking through them felt like being in a story book. Absolutely adorable and a must do for every one every where. Little shops tucked in the most quaint white buildings, opening into Little Venice and all the bars facing the Aegean sea. I was in total awe.
A favourite part of our trip was the food! My God, the food man. We both love Souvlakis and Gyros so ‘we were excited’ was an understatement. I also loved Greek breakfast! So much feta, greek yogurt and their style of eggs is so yummy. I always think that in terms of food, London is unbeatable but Greece is very much up there in my book now. Absolutely delish and set the bar very high for destination breakfasts moving forward.
Where to stay in Mykonos
We booked our initial stay on Ornos beach but quickly realized that we would want a more quiet, low key beach and area to spend our time in. We ended up booking with Archipelagos Hotel Mykonos (Kalo Livadi) which was the best decision for us. It was a very serene location and only 20 minutes by ATV to the old town. We honestly got the best of both worlds.
